Empowering Churches: My Path from Internship to Consulting

From Intern to Entrepreneur: My Journey into Church Consulting
When I first started my internship with several local churches, I didn’t realize the profound impact it would have on me. Little did I know that those experiences would shape the path I walk today, leading me to start my own church consulting business. The journey has been one filled with excitement, challenges, and immense growth, and I’d love to share it with you.
Stepping Into the World of Church Communication
As part of my internship, I worked with a variety of churches, each with its unique culture, struggles, and strengths. Initially, I was tasked with helping them enhance their communication strategies, particularly in the areas of social media, websites, and community outreach. I remember walking into these churches, unsure of how much I could contribute, but determined to learn as much as possible.
The first church I worked with had a strong sense of community but lacked the tools to communicate that strength to the outside world. They were stuck in the old ways of doing things and unsure of how to evolve in a digital age. I spent my time creating flyers, updating their blog, and assisting with their social media efforts, and it was fulfilling to see the church begin to thrive with a refreshed online presence. Slowly, I started to see how my work was making a difference in their community outreach.
Learning the Power of Storytelling
One thing that really stuck with me during my internship was the power of storytelling. Churches, at their core, are about stories—stories of faith, hope, and community. Yet, many didn’t know how to share those stories effectively online. I worked on crafting messages that resonated with their congregations and extended beyond the church walls, which was a deeply rewarding experience.
There was one particular church that I remember fondly. The pastor had such a passion for reaching out to the younger generation, but the church’s outdated website and lack of social media presence made it difficult to connect. Together, we built a strategy to engage the community through Facebook and Instagram, and within a few weeks, we began seeing new faces at Sunday services. Watching those families walk through the doors brought a sense of purpose to the work I was doing. It was a turning point for me, as I realized the powerful role communication plays in a church’s mission.
Facing Challenges and Finding Direction
Of course, the journey wasn’t without its challenges. One of the churches I worked with was struggling not just with its communication but with its overall sense of identity. Their congregation was shrinking, and many of the members were older, resistant to change, and unsure of the future. Despite the work I put into updating their website and creating a cohesive social media strategy, I felt as though my efforts were being done in vain. At times, it seemed as if the church was just waiting to fade away. It was a hard pill to swallow, but it taught me an important lesson: sometimes, even with the best intentions, you can’t force change where it isn’t welcome.
Still, through every obstacle, I grew more confident in my abilities and more passionate about helping churches navigate these difficult transitions. This was the driving force behind my decision to branch out and start my own consulting business. I wanted to help churches not only survive but thrive in today’s fast-paced, digitally connected world.
Taking the Leap: Launching My Business
After my internship ended, I found myself wanting to continue the work I had started. The idea of launching my own business had always been in the back of my mind, but now, with hands-on experience under my belt, I knew it was the right time. That’s how my church consulting business came to life.
The process of launching wasn’t easy—building a website, writing proposals, and reaching out to potential clients felt daunting at first. But I knew this was my calling. I saw the need for someone to come alongside churches, especially smaller ones, to help them with everything from strategic planning and social media management to creating effective community outreach strategies. I realized that many churches lacked the resources or knowledge to navigate these areas, and I was determined to fill that gap.
Reaching Out and Building Connections
Since launching, my primary focus has been on connecting with churches in need of support. I’ve reached out to numerous churches through personalized letters, emails, and even direct phone calls. In these correspondences, I’ve shared my story and highlighted the importance of having a strong online presence. Whether it's creating a new website, helping with social media strategy, or revitalizing community engagement, I am committed to helping churches tell their story in a way that resonates with today’s world.
The process of reaching out has been both exciting and nerve-wracking. There have been moments where I’ve felt discouraged—especially when I’ve sent letters and heard nothing back. But I’ve come to realize that building these relationships takes time. Each connection made is a step forward, and I know that the work I’m doing is needed.
What’s Next?
As I continue to grow my business, I remain focused on my ultimate goal: to help churches not just communicate more effectively but to genuinely connect with their communities. My journey is far from over, and I am excited about what lies ahead. Whether it’s through crafting the perfect social media post or helping a church design its first website, I know that every step I take is one that brings me closer to fulfilling my mission.
I hope my journey can serve as inspiration to others, whether you're in ministry, communications, or any field where you're striving to make a difference. It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been worth every moment. If you’re a church leader looking for guidance in your communications strategy or community outreach, I’d love to connect and help you tell your story in a way that brings growth and renewed life to your ministry.
Thank you for being part of this journey with me, and here’s to what the future holds!
